Aside from your content, your sidebar is the most configurable area on your website. By using widgets you can literally  do anything: Twitter feeds, Facebook feeds, Optin areas, Images, Text, Video.

The only real limitation of your sidebar is the width, most sidebars have a maximum of around 300px. Meaning you won’t want anything wider than this or it will overflow.
